Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person has an additional chromosome. Chromosomes are bundles of genes that shape the body’s development and function during pregnancy and after birth.

Normally, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes. However, babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes. Although individuals with Down syndrome may exhibit some similarities in appearance and behavior, each person possesses unique abilities.

People with Down syndrome typically have a lower IQ (a measure of intelligence) in the mildly to moderately impaired range and may have delayed speech compared to other children.
